Basic information about
Daley was merely the world’s greatest decathlete, bringing a competitive character and talent that was unique. His enthusiastic style on and off the track was crucial to his achievements and fame and made athletics cover news.
Daley Thompson has received more decathlon honors than anybody else before or after him.
He was the first person ever owning the World, Commonwealth, Olympic, and also European titles at the same time. At this time, he also made a World Record.
Daley Thompson’s career
Daley Thompson: Champion
Daley was winning in the competitions for long nine years of his career. He became Olympic Champion in both the years 1980 and 1984, in 1983 he became World Champion. In 1982 and 1986 Daley was European Champion. He happened to be Commonwealth Champion three times – in 1978, 1982, and 1986. He also made four times a new World Record (8648 in 1980, 8730 and 8774 in 1982 and 8847 in 1984 in Los Angeles).
In 1982 he was awarded the MBE, an in 1986 the OBE and even advanced to CBE in 2000. In 1982 was Daley Thompson elected BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Daley ended his fantastic career as an athlete in 1992 as a consequence of injury and moved on to play football for Wimbledon and Mansfield Town FC.
In January 2004 Daley established a fitness training business called Daley Fitness. Its purpose is to support people to get their fitness to new levels and at the same time encouraging them to start with a healthier lifestyle. Daley Fitness is welcoming individuals as well as corporate groups. It includes daily training sessions organized in groups that ran Daley himself.
Daley Thompson’s beliefs
Daley did a great job as a leading ambassador for the winning London 2012 Olympic bid. He concentrated on highlighting the advantages that hosting the Olympics would bring to education and schools. Moreover, he was a crucial personality in lobbying the international IOC members right down to the final vote in Singapore.
Daley is also associated with two charities, Barnardo´s and Laureus Sport for Good. He is an active sponsor and cooperates with both charities to support and promote their beautiful work.
He likes to spend his free time with his four children.
