Dirk Nowitzki was born on 19 June 1978 in Würzburg, Germany. He launched his professional career with a Würzburg DJk in the Bundesliga and then surprised the NBA coach with 33 points, 14 rebounds and three steals at the top of the Nike Hoop in 1998. As a result, Dirk was the ninth candidate in the organized business project of the NBA to send him from Milwaukee to Dallas.
Dirk Nowitzki’s career
His career has brought him numerous European and American awards and leaves no sign of slowing down. In 1998, Dirk Novitsky started his career in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks and since then had been a loyal Mavs player. While in Dallas, Dirk Nowicki led the Mavericks in 11 consecutive NBA playoffs. In 2006 he led the NBA finals in 2006 as well as in the year 2011 the first franchise championship.
Dirk became a member of the All-Star team 14 times, a member of the All-NBA team 12 times and is the first European-born NBA player, who in 2007 received the NBA MVP award. In the 2002 World Basketball Championship FIBA, Nowitzki won bronze with his German National Basketball Team. In 2005 he won the title of Best Basketball Player of the Year in Europe as he won a silver medal in the EuroBasket.
In the 2007 European Championship, Germany did not automatically qualify for the Olympic Games, so it passed the qualifying match and won the place for Olympic Games 2008. Dirk brought the German basketball team to its first Olympic Games since the 1992 Summer Olympics. At the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games, Dirk was appointed as the leader of the German Olympic team. By scoring an average of 17.0 points and 7.6 rebounds for the tournament, Dirk led the German team to tenth place.
Dirk Nowitzki’s awards & honors
On 18 December 2011, Nowitzki became the first German sports personality and the first basketball player who has ever receive this award. On 10 December 2012, he was the first non-American player who won the Naismith Heritage Award. Dirk, the non-American player, who has scored the most goals in NBA history, is now ranked 6th among the best players of all time, scoring with more than 31,560 points in the regular season.
Dirk Nowitzki’s beliefs
Dirk takes his work on the court seriously but is also determined to make a difference off the field. Every year, he appears and signs thousands of autographs in his quest to help the children in different communities.
In 2013, Dirk was appointed Germany’s ambassador to UNICEF to combat global malnutrition and promote healthy lifestyles. “UNICEF helps us understand how many children need our support. However, UNICEF is committed to finding solutions,” said Dirk after being named the new Germany’s ambassador.
In December 2007, the NBA awarded him the NBA Public Assistance Award in recognition of his extraordinary efforts in society and his continued charitable work. Whether meeting children during the ‘Make a Wish’ season or buying and giving Christmas toys to children at a local hospital for thousands of dollars. Dirk likes to give money to children in need. He states, “Helping children is one of the best things I have the opportunity to do as a professional athlete, and it is a great honor for me to participate in these experiences.”
Dirk Nowitzki founded two foundations. One of them, based in Dallas, is centered on the well-being of his community in Dallas as well as that of Africa. Another, in his hometown of Würzburg, empowering children through sport. “Thanks to this, we all have the chance to share positive encounters with children from all over the world.”
