Sigmar Gabriel’s career
Sigmar was born in Goslar in 1959. Before his studies, he was a soldier in the German Air Force. From 1982 he studied politics, sociology and German at the University of Göttingen. In 1987 he successfully did the second state examination as a grammar school teacher and right after that, until 1977 he taught in adult vocational training. In the same year, Sigmar Gabriel started his new career path as a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).
After several different jobs within his party in Lower Saxony, from 1999 to 2003, Gabriel became Prime Minister of the State of Lower Saxony.
From 2005 to 2009 he worked as the Federal Minister of the Environment in the first cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Moreover, from 2013 to 2017 Sigmar Gabriel was Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy.
From 2009 to 2017 he served as a chairman of the SPD party. Since Willy Brandt, he was the longest-serving leader of this party. At the beginning of 2017, he offered Martin Schulz to be his successor.
From 2013 to 2018 Sigmar Gabriel was a Vice-Chancellor of Germany and Germany’s Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2018.
Since the end of 2016, he has worked as a member of the German government’s cabinet committee on Brexit discussing organizational and structural matters related to the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union (EU).
